Emperors – My Baby Likes To Boogaloo (Mala) WOW!!! This is an AMAZING disc! Philly’s Emperor’s cover the Don Gardner classic and ratchet up the energy about 200%! From the wicked opening guitar riff to the pumping combo organ and vocals, it is immediately evident that this is a record to be reckoned with. The Emperors always sounded like a soul garage band and this is one of their hardest cuts. There’s supposed to be an LP length comp coming out on these guys and I’m gonna be first in line to get it. It’s just another reason why Philly was the place to be in the late 60’s.

Billy Davis – Stanky (Get Funky)
(Cobblestone) – A local Philly fave. The story of a man and his funky guitar is a stone SLAMMER! Heavy beat, muddy Mississippi gui-TAR, surrounding that groovy Cobblestone label, and a wailing horn section lay the foundation for Billy to tell the tale of Mississippi ‘…the place that FUNK originated from’ and the birth of his guitar that sounded so funky he ‘…named it STANKY! Me and Stanky, we’re mighty soulful now!’

It’ll make your stereo smell like bar-b-que. Lord have mercy!

Mary Lou Williams – The Credo (Mary) – Slow, deep groove from one of the most important figures in modern jazz piano. She released this slab of funky piano on her own label in the late 60’s/early 70’s and it kind of sounds like Wille Tee and the Gaturs on quaaludes. I hear there’s more where this came from, all ripe for sampling (especially that funky bass….whooaaaa dad).
Dakars –A Shot In The Dark (Josie) - B-side of a tasty organ jam, this is a nice funky tune with a great stop-time beat. Cool rolling horns, and subtley funky drums keep things moving
Ray Charles Orchestra – Booty Butt (TRC) - This groover actually went Top 20 in NYC in the early 70’s. Ray and company take a ‘Tramp’ inspired riff, throw in some rolling piano from the Southland, a honking sax and cries of ‘Booty! Booty! Booty!’ and come up with interesting results. Not your average Ray Charles 45 by a long shot.
Nu Sound Express – Ain’t It Good Enough (Silver Dollar) – "Is it good enough for you? Awwwwwwww You know it’s good!!:. Indeed. Funky classic with Meters inspired guitar and organ at the opening, revving up into a stone funky JB-style breakdown. The horns even have a touch of Afro-funk to them, and there’s a funky conga and bass breakdown in the back end. Howzabout that groovy label too???
Chuck Wood – Soul Shingaling (Roulette) B-side of a Northern fave ("Seven Days is Too Long"), ‘Soul Shing-A-Ling’ is a muddy, funky, stanky, stinky pile of turnip greens, guitar strings and back-up singers. Lawdy! Chuck sounds like he was singing across the street into a dictaphone. Solid!
