Exotics – Boogaloo Investigator (Excello)-
Wicked JB-style grooves that open up with a Dragnet riff. Very cool horns
and guitar and a wailing sax solo throughout, mixed with lots of that crazy,
jivey party talk. A real party starter and a hard groover.

| Hank
Ballard – How You Gonna Get Respect (When You Haven't Cut Your Process
Yet) (King) - Finally scored a copy of this brilliant JB
production. Here Hank raps to his “soulful brothers” about how it’s
time to unwind your conk and pick out that ‘fro. Great horns, organ and
most of all a fantastic vocal by Mr. Finger Poppin’ Time. Right up there
with other funky ‘Black is Beautiful’ discs like the Fabulous Counts
‘Girl From Kenya’ and Effie Smith’s ‘The Natural’ |

Music Makers –
Spring Fever Pts 1&2 / United Pts 1&2 (Gamble) –
I’m not sure, but I’d be willing to bet that the Music Makers were the
same bunch of guys that recorded as the Fabulous Emotions, Brothers Of Hope,
Delights Orchestra etc. etc., (i.e. Ronnie Baker, Norman Harris, Earl Young,
Bobby Eli , Bobby Martin, Thom Bell, Vince Montana and any of the other
Philly studio strong-men). The label says ‘featuring Bobby Robinson’
(who also wrote the tune) , so I’m guessing he’s the featured guitarist.
It’s a mellow, soulful instrumental (which opens with seaside sound
effects) with a guitar lead over string backing.
‘United’
which is also quite laid back is an organ feature (and was also included on
a recent Soul Jazz Philly Sound comp) and is a Gamble / Huff composition

Chuck
Edwards - Downtown Soulville (Soul City) - Whooooaaa Dad! UK issue
(on Dave Godin's legendary Soul City imprint) of one of the TOUGHEST
slices of funky soul to roll down the pike EVER! Chuck's got it
goin'awwwwn from the groovy opening guitar riff to the chugging organ. One
of my all-time favorite records.

JJ Jackson – Boogaloo Baby (Calla)
– Insanely cool b-side of ‘But It’s Alright’ is a much cooler tune
(though that may just be years of ‘But It’s Alright’-overplay fatigue
speaking). Great soul rave-up with a searing guitar line (later stolen for
Jacques Dutronc's 'La Responsable') and femme backing vocals ought to fill the dance
floor anywhere.

| Nella
Dodds – Finders Keepers Losers Weepers b/w A Girls Life (Wand)
– Cool Philly two-sider (which just broke the top100 in 1965) with a
Kenny Gamble tune on the a-side and an upbeat Luther Randolph (of Harthon
fame) number on the flip. Dodds had a number of cool 45’s, including a
cover of ‘Come See About Me’ which was also top 100. |

Thelma Houston
- Jumping Jack Flash (ABC/Dunhill) - Powerful version of the
Stones classic (and a great companion piece to Merry Clayton’s version of
‘Gimme Shelter’), produced by none other than Jimmy ‘Wichita
Lineman’ Webb. Manages to include slight baroque touches (haunting
strings) and remain hard and soulful.
