African Echoes - Big Time (Phil LA of Soul)
The flip side of this disc 'Zulu Lunchbag' is one of a couple of African themed sides out of Philly in the late 60's (like 'Akiwawa' by Cupit on Neptune). This side is a fast, horn driven number with some nice guitar. As this sounds like Philly session players,  I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that the 'Zulu Lunchbag' side of the disc is a completely different band.
NOTE: Greg Tormo informs me that this record was originally released on the Houston label Ovide (no Philly connection).

Tony Alvon & The Belairs - Stone Soul Candidate b/w Catch a Fox (Atlantic)
Known to funk collectors for the rare and extremely tasty 'Sexy Coffee Pot', this is one of the bands two easier-to-find 45s (not the misspelling of 'Alvon' on the label). The scan at right is actually the vocal a-side of this disc (a killer that sounds something like Maskman & The Agents). The flip is the instrumental dub which sports a big, big horn sound and some tight drums. You gotta love that Virtue production!

Big Al T Orchestra - Twenty Five Miles (Virtue)
Speaking of Virtue, here's one of their funkier outings. It may not be as much of a killer as the RDM Band's 'Butter Your Popcorn', but the Big Al T Orchestra (whoever they were) bring some heat with the Edwin Starr cover. The tune features some nice organ and some especially hard drums. The flip, 'Do The Slide' is slower but still pretty funky.

Pal & The Prophets - The Whip (Phil LA of Soul)
Pal and the Prophets had at least two other 45s, 'Lotta Good Lovin' on Phil LA and 'Peace Pipe' b/w 'Tea-Pee' on Jamie, no doubt released to capitalize on the success of the Electric Indian's 'Kee-Mo-Sabe'. 'The Whip' features the horn section prominently (another vote for the existence of a 'Philly Funk Sound') with some chugging guitar and piano. Nice one.

Sherlock Holmes Investigation - The Pot's Hot (CRS)
This is Carl 'Sherlock' Holmes, formerly of Philadelphia's Carl Holmes & the Commanders, who laid down a series of soul 45's for Atlantic, Parkway and Blackjack in the early to mid-60's. This 45, pulled from the rare (and recently reissued) Investigation LP, features Holmes' fuzz guitar prominently, as well as some nice funky flute and bubbling percussion.

The Willy Cole - Right On (Phil LA of Soul)
Don't know much about The Willy Cole. None of the names on the disc ring a bell. The production has a thick, bass heavy sound (the kick drum sounds like it's in the room with you) with some cool guitar (I have my suspicions that writer/producer Bill Coleman  might be 'The Willy Cole's guitarist).
